Girls on the Run participants and coaches reflect on the season and Duluth 5k event
Girls and coaches celebrated the season’s last Girls on the Run practice on Thursday, May 30, at Great Expectations School and, shortly after, headed to Duluth for a 5k run event.
The Girls on the Run program started three years ago in Grand Marais, aims to develop and foster relationships, build confidence, learn social skills, and have fun running. Nearly 20 third through fifth-grade girls have participated in the program for the past three years.
“It’s been really great throughout the years,” Girls on the Run coach Lori Rothstein said. “It’s really great to see them connect across different grades and grow throughout the years as they’re starting to really conceptualize and then apply different concepts into their own friendships.”
Rothstein said that this year, the program had nine coaches, including a younger coach and an 18-year-old junior coach. “It’s been great community building in that way.”
Former Girls on the Run participant and WTIP youth volunteer contributor Ezme Mundell traveled with the Girls on the Run team to Duluth for the 5k event.
“The Duluth 5k was a hot and fun event,” Mundell said. “The 5k is not meant to be a race; it’s for fun. You can walk it, run it, or skip it!”
The Girls on the Run participants wore pink shirts and glitter hair spray during the event and received participation awards after finishing.
WTIP’s Kalli Hawkins visited the season’s final Girls on the Run practice at Great Expectations School. The audio with coach Lori Rothstein and the nearly 20 girl participants is below.
