Heavy rain washes out Cook County road, impacting other roadways

The Cook County Highway Department announced today (May 1) that it has closed a portion of County Road 48 due to a culvert issue and issued an advisory for water running across County Road 7.

Highway Maintenance Supervisor Josh Dix says that out of an abundance of caution, the highway department is shutting down County Road 48 east of the intersection with Bally Creek Road, between fire numbers 272 and 260.

Dix says there is a culvert with the water running around it rather than through, and it is undermining the road.

Dix said that the department is also aware of the water flowing across County Road 7 near the intersection with County Road 48. The area has been marked with traffic cones.

Dix says the water should go down through the day as the rain lets up, and thanked everyone for their patience. Local highway officials also encourage travelers to pay attention to changing road conditions throughout the day as more flooding is possible.
