Journalists from World Press Institute visit WTIP to discuss community journalism, news coverage
Journalists from around the globe were in Grand Marais, Grand Portage, the Gunflint Trail, and other areas of Cook County this week.
On March 13, the 10 journalists chosen as the World Press Institute’s 2023 Fellowship program took part in a public forum on journalism at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.
The WPI program runs from March 3 through May 6 this year. The fellows will spend these nine weeks examining the free press and media innovations and learning about America’s social and cultural diversity and its political system, according to WPI officials. The Cook County Historical Society serves as the sponsor/hosts locally for the journalists during this portion of their trip. .
Four of the journalists stopped by WTIP March 15 to discuss a variety of topics. Joining WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs to discuss a number of issues related to journalism, including community journalism, were the following journalists:
–Danilo Silva, international news editor for GloboNews in Rio de Janeiro.
— Tarek Kai, senior reporter for France 24 News TV in Paris.
— Fauziyya Tukur, senior journalist, disinformation journalist for the British Broadcasting Corporation in Nigeria.
— Piyumi Fonseka, deputy editor of investigations for the Daily Mirror newspaper in Colombo.
Topics discussed during the live interview include:
–The difference between community journalism and mainstream media;
–Reporting on the recent incident in Grand Marais that left a local man dead and another community member behind bars;
–If journalists can be activists and objective reporters.
