Local Fire Departments join forces to host hands-on recruitment event

Have you ever been curious about what it’s like to be a firefighter?

On Saturday, Nov. 2, Cook County individuals will have the opportunity to suit up in firefighting turnout gear and experience firefighting simulations firsthand.

The nine Cook County Fire Departments are joining forces to host an informational and recruitment event at the Grand Marais Fire Hall to encourage more volunteers to join the fire departments.

“We never have enough,” Hovland Fire Chief Terry Spieker said. “We could always use more people.”

Spieker said the fire departments will have turnout gear and air packs available for the public to try on. The event will also include a propane burn simulation so individuals can experience what it’s like to put out a fire using a hose line.

“I think we’re going to be doing a little search and rescue event, so you’ll be able to know what it’s like to crawl into a dark building and look for things,” Spieker said.

The informational and recruitment event will also feature vehicle extrication simulations. The event will be held at the Grand Marais Fire Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

WTIP spoke with the Hovland Fire Chief about the upcoming recruitment event. The audio from the interview is below.
