Molly Hicken honored at reception recognizing her time as County Attorney
After 17 years with in the Cook County Attorney’s office, Molly Hicken announced in October that she would be leaving her role as County Attorney at the beginning of 2025. Hicken was recognized by the county at a public reception on Jan. 2, her final day with the county.
The reception was attended by county employees and members of the public, and former judge Michael Cuzzo and Lake County Attorney Lara Nygaard.
County Commissioner Ann Sullivan made a statement at the reception. She commended Hicken on her professional accomplishments, including her public communication abilities. She said, “One of Molly’s standout qualities is her commitment to transparency and community engagement. She has made it a priority to educate the public about legal processes, empowering residents with knowledge and fostering trust in the justice system. Her ability to explain intricate legal concepts in accessible terms has helped bridge the gap between the legal system and the people it serves.”
At the reception, Hicken told WTIP that while she is moving on from the county, she values the time that she has spent as County Attorney. She said, “I’m really fortunate to have had my legal career here, my entire legal career here, and to have been surrounded by so many dedicated public servants.” She added, “I’ve learned so many lessons while I’ve practiced law here. I’ve seen so many people who are dedicated to making this a good place to live, to keeping it a good place to live. There are so many good ideas. There’s so much energy around the North Shore and Cook County. I’m really proud to have been part of what’s happened, the progress in the last 17 years.”
Jeanne Peterson will take on the remainder of Hicken’s term. She told WTIP that she feels that her time as Assistant County Attorney has set her up for her new role. She said that while she is shifting into the the County Attorney position, the department will continue to serve the community. She said, “I think in the meantime on that journey to proficiency, the goals will be sustainability and transparency.”
