Public defender’s office, Grand Portage Band host September event to help resolve warrants and legal issues
The 6th Judicial District public defender’s office is hosting a September event in collaboration with the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
The event is designed to help individuals resolve outstanding warrants, assist with driver’s license issues, and discuss expungement and pardon applications.
The event will be held at the Grand Portage Log Community Building on Sept. 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.“We’re really honored and humbled to be invited,” said Dan Lew, the 6th Judicial District chief public defender.
Lew and Cook County Judge Steve Hanke will be in attendance at the upcoming event and available to answer questions and assist individuals in resolving various legal issues.
“We know coming to the courthouse to resolve a warrant does not feel safe,” Lew said. “So this is a safe place to come resolve a warrant.”
Lew said for the past six years, the 6th Judicial District Court has held similar events, including with the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Throughout the years and various events, Lew said the team of colleagues has helped “clear hundreds of warrants.”
“So this is really important to us,” Lew said. “It’s very important that we serve our neighbors.”
Lew said that for anyone who is intimidated or nervous about attending the event, they should contact him to discuss any concerns or legal matters before the event at 218-302-8805 or Daniel.Lew@pubdef.state.mn.us.
“I’ll be glad to chat before Sept. 2 or after Sept. 2,” he said. “We want you to feel safe. I want to encourage you to have the courage to take that first step, to live a little better, so the tomorrows can be better.”
WTIP’s Kalli Hawkins spoke with Dan Lew, the 6th Judicial District Court chief public defender, about the upcoming event, the process to resolve various legal matters, and more.
