Results from Election Day in Grand Portage
Tuesday was Election Day in Grand Portage. There were three council seats on the ballot—two committeeperson positions and secretary-treasurer.
Obtaining the most votes Tribal Council secretary-treasurer is April McCormick. She defeated Joan Johnson. McCormick won this race 167-96.
Incumbent William “Bill” Myers was running for reelection as committeeperson-at-large 1. Challenging Myers was Toby Stephens. Stephens won the seat on the Tribal Council in a close race by the count of 132-130.
There was a vacancy for Committee-person-at-large 2 as long-serving council member John Morrin did not run for re-election. Running to fill his seat were Agatha Armstrong and Rob Hull. Armstrong won the seat on the Tribal Council 170-92.
The Grand Portage Tribal Council consists of a chairperson, vice chairperson, secretary/treasurer, and two committee members. All positions are four-year terms. The Grand Portage Tribal Council is the governing body of the reservation, which is a member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. The election is being held in accordance with the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe constitution.
