Severe weather brings power outages across Cook County for second week in a row

Updated 2:06 p.m.

Just one week after a wind storm brought trees down across Cook and Lake Counties, disrupting power across the region, some residents are in the dark, again. This time, the winds have come with heavy rain.

The National Weather Service issued a Wind Advisory for the area beginning at midnight and ending at noon on Nov. 19. The rain began overnight from Monday into Tuesday, and is forecast to continue throughout Tuesday.

Cook County residents have reported rainfall amounts to WTIP on Nov. 19:

  • Grand Portage – 1.3″ at 8:30 a.m.
  • Hovland – 1.5″ at 8:30 a.m.
  • Grand Marais – 4.8″ at 1:30 p.m.
  • Deeryard Lake – 3.2″ at 8:30 a.m.

Some area residents also lost power Tuesday morning. Arrowhead Cooperative was notified of customers experiencing outages across the region. Steve Waver, electric operations coordinator for Arrowhead Cooperative, told WTIP that roughly 100 households were without power across 10 outage events. He added that Arrowhead crews mobilized to address the outages during the early morning hours and have already restored power to several areas as of 9 a.m.

Numerous reports of downed trees have been reported throughout Cook County.

Those experiencing a power disruption outside the city of Grand Marais should contact Arrowhead Cooperative by phone at (218) 663-7239, or by reporting the outage through their website. Grand Marais residents can contact Grand Marais Public Utilities at 218-387-1848.
