Springtime? April Fools! Winter storm set to dump a foot of snow

Some North Shore residents do not find Mother Nature’s idea of an April Fool’s joke very funny this year.

Instead of continued 40-degree temperatures and sunshine, residents can expect 10 to 14 inches of snow starting this evening as a powerful winter storm sweeps through the region.

Kevin Huyck, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Duluth, said the low-pressure system is “coming out of Colorado,” the trajectory appears to take it right through East Central Minnesota, up in Northwest Wisconsin, and along the Lake Superior shoreline.

“With the terrain here, we may see some enhanced snowfall as that easterly and southeasterly wind goes up the hill,” Huyck said. “Looking at a potential for some significant snowfall for portions of the (WTIP) listening area.”

A winter storm warning is in effect from April 1 at 7 p.m. until April 2 at 7 p.m. Precipitation and heavy snow is expected to begin overnight on April Fools’ Day, with breezy conditions increasing into Wednesday.

Huyck said the low-pressure system will bring heavy, wet snow, making it harder to shovel or plow. “It’s going to stick better to trees and power lines,” he said. “So looking at a possibility, maybe some power outages, could see some branches coming down.”

WTIP spoke with National Weather Service meteorologist Kevin Huyck on Monday, March 31, ahead of the upcoming winter storm. The audio from the interview is below.
