Stretch of Scenic Highway 61 set to reopen in early November

A section of Scenic Highway 61 along the North Shore is set to reopen as soon as Thursday, Nov. 3. The road shut down in mid-October for emergency repairs.

St. Louis County officials say a slope on the lake side of the scenic highway near Two Harbors was essentially falling into the lake. The damage to the popular roadway was across the highway from the New Scenic Cafe, between Duluth and Two Harbors. Repaving of the road took place Monday, Oct. 31.

The slope failure did not affect the four-lane, Highway 61 Expressway that most motorists from Cook County use while traveling to or from the Duluth area.

Rachel Gregg is a bridge engineer for St. Louis County. She spoke with WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs Oct. 31 to share an update on the project.
