Superior Creamery opens in downtown Grand Marais

With a fresh coat of paint and a little hard work, a vacant building in Grand Marais was brought back to life.

The old Inga & Lena’s building on Broadway Avenue is now home to Superior Creamery, a new ice cream and sandwich shop in Grand Marais.

Alex Giudice and his business partner, Christine, are the owners of the new business. The couple recently moved to the Grand Marais community from Juneau, Alaska. However, Giudice shared that he has ties to the north shore dating back to the early 2000s.

“I worked at the end of Gunflint Trail for quite a few summers as an outfitter,” he said.

In addition, Giudice worked at one of the sled dog kennels east of town.

The new owners said the process of opening the creamery was a year-long culmination of looking at different business plans and properties. Ultimately, they settled on a location and leased the building from Superior North, LLC.

In addition to offering fresh and handmade small-batch ice cream, Superior Creamery plans to offer shareable snacks, sandwiches, salads, and sodas on tap.

The owners shared some final thoughts about their new venture and what they look forward to about joining the community.

Giudice said, “We’re both really into small-town life and getting to know our neighbors in the business community and in our personal lives, too.”

He added, “We’ve made a decision to spend our lives here, and we really are excited to become part of the Grand Marais community.”

Superior Creamery will be opening Saturday, June 4. WTIP’s Kalli Hawkins learns more about the new owners and what they look forward to about joining the community. Audio below.
