Veterans get rides, fishing and more from local 4WD group

There is a lot going on this Memorial Day weekend. A graduation ceremony at Cook County High School, the LeGrand du Nord gravel bike race—and the Tread Lightly Off-Road celebration of veterans.

The local 4-wheel drive (4WD) club consists of backroad-riding enthusiasts. Members drive everything from jeeps and pick-ups to all-wheel-drive cars like Subarus all over the forest roads of Cook County. On Memorial Day weekend, Tread Lightly Off-Road (TLOR) invites veterans in the Hometown Heroes Outdoors program to join them. This is the third event.

The weekend includes more than a ride through the forest. Veterans are treated to dinner at Birch Terrace Supper Club in Grand Marais and at Poplar Haus on the Gunflint Trail. The group is riding to Grand Portage Legion Post 2009 where the legion members will fix them lunch on Saturday.

Several fishing excursions and target practice are also part of the weekend.
