Volunteers needed for Lutsen 99er bike race

The 14th annual Lutsen 99er bike race will take place on Saturday, Jun. 29. Two of the race organizers, Emily Jeffers and Signe Larson, spoke to WTIP about the event.

There are four adult races, the 99er, 69er, 45er, and the 29er, plus a race just for kids. All of the race courses are loops, starting and ending at the Superior National Golf Course. The longest race, the 99er, takes riders on a 102 mile loop full of hills. According to Jeffers, the lead cyclists of the 99er generally take about 5 hours and 45 minutes to complete the course.

Registration for the race opened this past January, and at this point all of the races are full. This year 1800 riders are registered to participate, including 250 children.

The race organizers said that there will be entertainment during the race, with live music and food trucks at the golf course. Spectators are also encouraged to watch from designated spaces  along the course. Jeffers said that the designated areas help ensure safety for riders and spectators, alike.

Jeffers and Larson said that they are still in need of volunteers for the day of the event. Those interested can find more information about how to get involved on the race website, or they can contact Jeffers directly at emilyj@brushpoint.org or by phone at (785)320-3160.
