Winter storm continues with sleet, wind, and snow conditions in Cook County

Many Cook County residents woke up to an interesting mix of precipitation on Tuesday morning.

Following blizzard-like conditions on Monday, where areas closer to the Lake Superior shore received approximately 7 to 9 inches of snow, the late Mar. storm transitioned into a mix of freezing rain and snow overnight.

The situation is not likely to improve for the remainder of Tuesday.

Erik McDonald, a Cook County resident living near Poplar Lake along the Gunflint Trail, told WTIP at 7 a.m. this morning the conditions were “some strange combination of freezing rain/sleet.”

The strange precipitation mix has thickly coated many windshields, driveways, and roads throughout Cook County.

On Tuesday morning, there were reports of vehicles in ditches due to slippery road conditions in Cook County and along the North Shore. The National Weather Service said driving conditions may be hazardous throughout the day. In addition, patchy blowing snow may significantly reduce visibility.

At 8:30 a.m. the Cook County Highway Department crews reported ‘white out’ conditions farther inland along the Gunflint Trail.

Around 10:30 a.m. the sleet and mixed precipitation transformed into large snowflakes and blustery conditions in Grand Marais.

Wind gusts may reach as high as 40 mph today. The winter storm warning remains in effect until Tuesday at 7 p.m. Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches and ice accumulations of around one-tenth of an inch are expected.
