Severe winter weather dominates news headlines across Minnesota

Snowfall varied across Cook County during a winter storm that rolled through Monday, Feb. 20. Reports of more than 10 inches of snow were reported to WTIP from residents in the Tofte and Schroder areas. Further inland and east of town reports ranged from 5 to 6 inches of new snow on Monday. Strong winds Monday night gusting up to 40 mph were reported by the National Weather Service.

More snow is expected for most of Cook County Wednesday night into Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Twin Cities metro area and southern Minnesota are bracing for a memorable winter storm that could break records for snowfall.

Winter storm watches and warnings were posted across the southern half of the state starting Tuesday night. The metro could see up to 20 inches of snow from Tuesday night to Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The most snowfall and worst travel conditions will be Tuesday night through Thursday, as heavy snow combines with strong north winds gusting up to 40 mph, according to the Weather Service.

For Cook County residents traveling south to Duluth or the metro, the National Weather Service says travel could be very difficult to impossible, and the gusty winds could bring down tree branches and cause power outages. For people aiming to visit the North Shore this weekend, the storm system is on track to clear out by Friday morning across much of the state.
