Gunflint Trail receives nearly 17 inches of snow, more in the forecast

The first winter storm of the season in Minnesota brought more snow to the Gunflint Trail and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness than any other region of the state.

The Cook County Highway Department reported nearly 17 inches of snow had fallen by Tuesday morning (Nov. 15) in the Mid-Gunflint Trail area.

Most of the North Shore and WTIP listening area recorded between 6-10 inches of snow. Areas near Hovland and Grand Portage also reported higher snowfall amounts, similar to those found along the Gunflint Trail.

Some of the smaller inland lakes in the BWCA and throughout Cook County were starting to freeze and hold snow on top of ice, according to multiple sources WTIP spoke with Tuesday morning.

More snow is in the forecast for northeastern Minnesota during the next 48 hours, with another 6-10 inches of snow possible for the WTIP listening area by the end of the day Thursday. Following the snow, a cold snap is expected to settle over the Boundary Waters and North Shore areas. Temperatures are forecast in the low single digits each night this weekend for the Mid-Trail area.
