Letteracy Deck hosting ‘Paint Your Own Sky’ George Morrison stamp event during Labor Day weekend

The Letteracy Deck, a new public project created by Minnesota Children’s Press in Grand Marais, has been a vibrant and colorful success this summer.

“People really want to sit down and have a pause from the business of life. A pause from screens; collect their thoughts,” said Anne Brataas, the executive director of the Minnesota Children’s Press.

When setting out to create the Letteracy Deck, Brataas set a goal of engaging with individuals to write and mail 1400 letters. To her surprise, the Letteracy Deck has well exceeded her expectations.

As her Sept. 11 end date creeps closer, she has mailed nearly 3,000 letters. “It’s just awesome,” she said.

Before the public project wraps up for the summer, Brataas is hosting a ‘Paint Your Own Sky’ George Morrison stamp event from Sept. 1-5 to try and exceed that 3000 letter mark.

She has 400 George Morrison stamps available and a handful of blank postcards. She invites the public to join her on the shores to celebrate the inspiring artwork and legacy of George Morrison.

The George Morrison stamp was issued in April of 2022, with a large community event in Grand Portage. “They’re really beautiful stamps,” Brataas said.

Brataas said she hopes individuals stop by and enjoy taking time to slow down, interact with others, and use their imagination.

WTIP’s Kalli Hawkins stopped by the Letteracy Deck to speak with Anne Brataas, the Minnesota Children’s Press executive director and tested a ‘Paint Your Own Sky’ prototype. The audio from the interview is below.
