Major construction project coming to Gunflint Trail near Grand Marais in 2024

After winter, comes construction season.

Or so goes the Minnesota rhetoric. And next year, road construction is coming to the lower section of the Gunflint Trail.

In June 2024, the Cook County Highway Department will start a significant construction project on the Gunflint. The project will impact the Trail from its intersection with Fifth Avenue in Grand Marais to the “Four Corners” area near County Road 8, also known as Devil Track Road.

The construction will have this section of the Gunflint operating with traffic-control lights and only one lane of operation for the entire summer in 2024. In other words, if you live on Devil Track Lake or have a canoe trip planned for an entry point located up the Gunflint Trail, plan on it taking longer to get where you are going.

Cook County Highway Engineer Robbie Hass stopped by WTIP to talk about the 2024 Gunflint project during WTIP’s fall membership drive. Audio below.
