Canoe outfitters remain closed under state order, golf courses open

On Friday, April 17, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz issued an executive order expanding on some types of outdoor recreation that North Shore residents and others across the state can engage in as the COVID-19 pandemic continues toward May.

In part, the order allows for Minnesotans to take part in golfing, boating, fishing, hunting and hiking while strictly maintaining social distancing guidelines.

Furthermore, Walz’s decision allows a number of businesses to reopen, including golf courses and bait shops.

While the order expands outdoor opportunities, campgrounds on Superior National Forest and across the state remain closed. In addition, outdoor retailers and businesses that rent recreational equipment, including canoe rentals for the BWCAW, are to remain closed at this time.

WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs spoke with District 3A Representative Rob Ecklund about the executive order from the governor focused on outdoor recreation.
