Grand Marais protest honors woman killed in ICE shooting
Protesters lined Highway 61 on Saturday, sprawling across the entrance to Java Moose and Wisconsin St. to remember Renee Nicole Good, who was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis earlier this week.
Arrowhead Indivisible organized the demonstration, which was part of a coordinated national protest following the shooting Wednesday. Organizers did not provide an estimate of the crowd size, but said it was among the largest demonstrations in Grand Marais since 2020.

“We had people who don’t even live here sign up to be here today,” one of the Arrowhead Indivisible organizers, Pat Campanero, told WTIP. “Right now it seems and feels to me like [ICE] is weaponized to take advantage of the general public, and we are scared.”
The event was posted on Mobilize.us and coincided with protests held in communities across the country in the days following the shooting.
In Grand Marais, protesters braved icy streets, snow and cold winds off Lake Superior. A crowd of all ages carried signs, played drums, blew whistles and chanted, while passing vehicles honked in support.
“This was a woman who could’ve been me,” Barbara Gabler told WTIP. “We’re in this together. We will prevail.”

While ICE activity has largely been concentrated in the Twin Cities metro area, Arrowhead Indivisible members said they have begun discussions with local law enforcement about protecting immigrant communities in Cook County.
“Our group is undertaking discussions and hopes to form a rapid response effort in this area,” Gabler said. “We have been and are in communication with Sheriff Pat Eliasen. We’re going to ask him to be at our February meeting. He’s been at a meeting before where he said the Sheriff is not going to be helping ICE pick up people; they have enough of their own work to do. They will only arrest people if they are breaking the law.”
Local clergy are organizing a candlelight prayer vigil at Harbor Park on Sunday at 4 p.m. The vigil is expected to last about 30 minutes.
