North Shore Health to host lab open house April 25

North Shore Health will host an open house for its laboratory April 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event offers the community an opportunity to meet staff members and view equipment essential to patient care.

During the event, blood testing and glucose screenings will be available. Anyone seeking a glucose screening will need to fast for 12 to 14 hours beforehand.

Laboratory Director Muain Haseeb joined North Shore Health with 30 years of experience, including work at large academic medical centers and managing international diagnostic networks.

“My journey to North Shore Health was driven by a desire to bring that world class level of care to a community setting,” Haseeb told WTIP.  “I believe people in a small town deserve the same clinical excellence you would find in a major city.”

The event coincides with National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week. Laboratory professionals play a critical role in patient care, with studies estimating that 60% to 70% of medical decisions are based on laboratory testing.

“Day to day, we aren’t just pushing buttons. We are doing maintenance, running quality controls, calibrating sensitive equipment and instruments, analyzing blood, body fluids, and tissues for abnormalities, for infection or anemia, and testing blood for life-saving transfusions,” Haseeb said.

North Shore Health’s laboratory team consists of eight employees. Haseeb said recruiting in a remote location can be challenging. The organization is currently seeking a medical laboratory technician and two medical assistants.

Haseeb said there are also advantages to working in a rural community.

“We have the advantage of personal connection, and that’s the real difference — the heart behind the science,” Haseeb said. “The sample on a bench isn’t just a number or a barcode. It belongs to a family member, a neighbor, a friend or a teacher. That connection brings a level of care you won’t find in a massive urban hospital.”

WTIP spoke with Haseeb about the open house, his journey to Cook County and the laboratory department at North Shore Health. Audio of that conversation is available below.
