Local Business Spotlight: The Fisherman’s Daughter

Four years ago, Katie and Parker Slanga became stewards of The Fisherman’s Daughter, taking over a business long shaped by local ownership. It was less a reinvention than a continuation.

“It’s an honor to own The Fisherman’s Daughter,” said Katie Slanga. “Some really amazing entrepreneurs have been in that business before us and have paved a really successful path for us.”

The Slanga’s have kept the business and the treasured menu ingredients of the former Dockside Fish Market in rotation, including the original breading for the fish dishes.

That foundation is still evident in staples like fish & chips, first introduced by the owners of Dockside Fish Market, Shele and Harley Tofte. Slanga said the menu also carries forward newer additions, such as fish tacos and cheese curds, brought in by more recent owners Abby Tofte, Sam Hedstrom, and Kate and Jeremy Keeble.

“I feel pretty proud to say that it is almost the same that it’s been the last 30 plus years,” Katie Slanga said. “We haven’t changed much.”

While the business may be largely unchanged, the Slangas have added their own personality to the building and the business. The business is now open six days a week and, in recent years, has undergone updates to its interior and merchandise.

Katie Slanga said she gives a lot of credit to their staff for the support and dedication throughout the years.

“Our amazing staff has carried us through these last four years,” Katie Slanga said. “When I look back, I’m just amazed at how lucky we’ve been.”

The busy summer season will arrive in a mere few weeks for the owners of The Fisherman’s Daughter and others in Grand Marais. Slanga, who said she’s looking forward to May’s arrival, said the business will host the annual Herring Fest over Memorial Day weekend.

WTIP’s Kalli Hawkins spoke with The Fisherman’s Daughter owner Katie Slanga for the latest edition of the Local Business Spotlight. Slanga talks about the business, balancing ownership and raising a family, memorable experiences with customers, and more. Audio is below.
