Vikings Weekly: Volleyball and football roll, cross county gear up for conference meet

Volleyball

The Cook County volleyball team swept the Silver Bay Mariners in three sets Thursday night, winning 25-16, 25-23 and 25-11.

The result was a far cry from the close five-set match the teams played when they first met in late September.

“We were composed under the pressure of rivalry and being on their home turf.  Our girls mixed up their hits, tips, rolls, and dumps for a really stellar offense. The front row showed up with incredible blocking and smashing down overpassed balls,” head coach Colette Mueller told WTIP.

The Vikings have been on a roll since their first win over Silver Bay. Thursday’s victory extended Cook County’s winning streak to six matches, including a tournament championship last weekend.

Cook County is 5-3 in conference play as the postseason approaches later this month.

The Vikings travel to Fond du Lac Ojibwe High School on Monday. The junior varsity team will play at 4:45 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 6 p.m.

Cross Country

The North Shore Storm competed in the Swain Invitational on Saturday, with the boys’ team finishing fifth and the girls’ team placing sixth.

Sam Swartz led the boys, placing 11th with a time of 16:53. Sophia Schut led the girls with a time of 20:20.

The Storm has a busy week ahead, traveling to the Pequot Invitational on Tuesday and the Ely Invitational on Thursday. The meets give the teams two final opportunities to prepare for the Polar League Conference Meet on Oct. 13.

Football

The Cook County Vikings hosted the Northome-Kelliher Mustangs on Friday night at Lyle Anderson Field. Both teams entered the game unbeaten in conference play, but Cook County continued its strong start with a 50-6 victory.

Northome-Kelliher’s best offense stalled out before reaching the red zone. Cook County’s offense, meanwhile, scored 28 points before halftime with its signature run game and chunk plays through the air.

Middle linebacker Devan Rude recorded his 400th career tackle during the game. Rude entered Friday’s contest leading the Vikings with more than 10 tackles per game.

The Vikings travel to Bigfork next Friday to face the Huskies. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the game will air on WTIP.
