2022 Gunflint Trail Canoe Races results and event highlights

After a two-year hiatus, the Gunflint Trail Canoe Races returned to the Northwoods. And with gusto.

Multiple outfitters and volunteers came together to host the entertaining and competitive event to raise funds for the Gunflint Fire Department. Proceeds from the sale of shirts, raffle tickets, and food all benefit the Gunflint Fire Department and contribute to maintaining the fire hall and equipment.

The Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department (GTVFD) is an all-volunteer full-service agency founded in 1992.  The department responds to medical emergencies, structure fires, and wildland fires in the Gunflint Trail area.

While the competition was intense during the July 20 event, the team to walk away with bragging rights, and The Trail Cup Paddle was Voyageur Outfitters.

Coming in shortly behind in second place were two determined teams, resulting in a tie: Menogyn and the Gunflint Lodge.

WTIP’s live reporting duo, CJ Heithoff and Rhonda Silence attended the event on July 20 and interviewed canoe race participates, Gunflint Fire Department crew members, and volunteers. The audio below contains highlights from the live broadcast.
