Evacuation training to take place on the Gunflint Trail
An evacuation training drill is taking place on the Gunflint Trail today (May 24). The event will start at approximately 5 p.m.
The event is being organized and led by the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department.
Last summer’s busy fire season in and around the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness led to a number of closures near the Gunflint Trail. Last August, residents of the Gunflint Trail were on an evacuation notice as fires burned closed to the popular scenic byway.
Today’s evacuation training drill is only a precaution measure and planning exercise. Fire danger remains low in all of Cook County and across the BWCA at this time.
