Ezme goes sailing on Lake Superior

Story by WTIP youth volunteer Ezme Mundell

I went on my first sailing trip with my friends Luna Kneen, Thea Hedstrom, and Everlee Schueller. Thea is the one who invited us all, her family goes sailing all the time and has a boat kept in Bayfield, Wisconsin.

On Thursday, August 8th we started driving toward Bayfield after coming from a school camping trip together. We were exhausted from doing a mile+ portage 2 days in a row! On the car ride, we watched silly movies and relaxed! We stopped at Vida Pizza in Duluth, MN! I highly recommend it. It’s so good. I got margarita pizza. My favorite! When we got to the Bayfield marina we settled in and fell asleep FAST!

The next morning we woke up and drove to downtown Bayfield to get breakfast! I got cream cheese-stuffed french toast! Sounds weird right, well it was really good! A great balance of sweet and creamy. We walked around town popping in shops! Then me and Luna being the first at sailing wanted to get out on the water and get to sailing!

It was a windy day for sailing but we went anyway, we made up what island to stop at for the night on the way! Sailing is so cool! I always tried to jump in and help Thea’s parents let the sail out or hook the boat up to the dock. Thea’s mom Alyssa said that we were being such good sports because sailing is kind of boring when it’s rainy and windy! I was okay with the weather though, we painted and played board games! We anchored near Stockton Island one of the many Apostle Islands.

The next morning the weather was better and the sun was starting to peak out! We had avocado and egg toast! Yummy my favorite. We headed over to Stockton Island to check it out! We went on a little hike the crept over beautiful rocks. Then when we got back from the hike we got to swim on a very pretty sandy beach! I swear it felt like we were in the ocean. We then took off into the waves toward the famous Madeline Island.

We went over to Madeline to get ice cream and play fun field games like Volleyball. I got super delicious ice cream, one scoop of caramel chocolate goodness, and one of cookies and cream! We also hit the volleyball in the air 50 times before it hit the ground. It was a lot of fun I will never forget! We went swimming in cold water while the adults made a yummy dinner, veggie brats, green beans, baked beans, and corn on the cob. We went to sleep with no waves at all just about as calm as can be.

At about 4 am the waves turned huge, Luna and I slept in the front of the boat going up and down, like 5 feet in the air! It was crazy and hard to sleep! Thea’s parents got up and sailed the boat back to the marina back in Bayfield.

The next day we played around in the Marina pool. We played marco polo and attempted to do chicken fights! We showered up and headed home! But before we left Bayfield we got really good fish and chips and fresh fruit such as blueberries and peaches! Yum! Overall, it was an incredible trip and super fun to be with my best friends!
