Grand Marais musher wins Beargrease mid-distance race

Grand Marais resident Joanna Oberg is the winner of the John Beargrease half-marathon this year.

Oberg was the first to cross the finish line at the Trestle Inn during the mid-distance race. Oberg crossed the finish line Monday morning before the sun crept over the pines, completing the race at approximately 4 a.m., according to race officials. The race took her just over 15 hours to complete.

Another local musher,  Rita Wehseler, from Tofte, finished third in the mid-distance race. She crossed the finish line just after 6 a.m. Monday.

Meanwhile, the mushers in the full-distance marathon continue their race today on Monday. The leading mushers, including defending champion Ryan Anderson, were on pace to reach Trailcenter on Poplar Lake later this morning.
