Grand Portage National Monument closes Fort Charlotte Campground due to wildfire danger

Grand Portage National Monument has closed the Fort Charlotte Campground because of elevated wildfire danger and active fires burning across northeastern Minnesota.

In a news release, monument officials said the closure is a proactive measure intended to protect the safety and well-being of visitors, staff and nearby communities.

The closest wildfire is the Little Knife Fire, burning west of Seagull Lake along the Gunflint Trail. The campground also sits about 20 miles by hiking trail from South Fowl Lake on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, which remains closed because of wildfire activity. Monument officials said the fires continue to create unpredictable and hazardous conditions.

The campground will remain closed until fire danger decreases and conditions allow for a safe reopening, according to the release.

Grand Portage National Monument is a fee-free site co-managed with the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. The monument preserves the history of one of North America’s most important fur trade centers while honoring the heritage of the Anishinaabeg Ojibwe.
