Hauschild, Skraba and Stauber secure reelection

This article was updated to include a statement from Sen. Grant Hauschild.

The DFL secured control of Minnesota’s state government in Tuesday’s midterm elections, winning the governor’s race and majorities in both the Minnesota House and Senate. Meanwhile, as Democrats flipped U.S. House seats across the country, Republican Rep. Pete Stauber defeated DFL challenger Trina Swanson to win reelection in Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District.

In all three races, Cook County voted heavily in favor of DFL candidates.

Incumbent DFL Sen. Grant Hauschild won reelection last night by a significantly larger margin than in 2022. Hauschild received 54.3% of the vote, according to unofficial results available Wednesday morning, Nov. 4.

The race between Hauschild and Republican challenger Andrea Zupancich was closely watched by both parties on election night. In 2022, Hauschild narrowly defeated Zupancich by 703 votes. Both parties viewed the 2026 rematch as a key battleground in determining control of the Minnesota Senate, and the race attracted significant campaign spending.

“When we started this campaign, we committed to being the candidate that will put the Northland first, ahead of party,” said Senator Hauschild. “I am honored to continue fighting for our region. I will keep fighting for access to affordable healthcare and childcare, combating fraud, and making sure the Northland gets its fair share down in St. Paul. Our victory is sending a signal to the rest of the country that the Northland is not for sale.”

Cook County voters favored Hauschild, who received 72% of the vote, compared with 27% for Zupancich.

Stauber received 53.06% of the vote, his narrowest victory margin since first winning the seat in 2018. In 2024, Stauber won reelection with approximately 58% of the vote.

Cook County voters favored Swanson, who received nearly 72% of the vote, compared with 28% for Stauber.
