Local Business Spotlight: North Superior Fishery
This month marks one year since North Superior Fishery launched its food truck in Grand Marais.
Over the past year, owners Eric Brisson and Tyler Smith have learned to balance the demands of commercial fishing, operating a food truck, and managing marketing and social media. The food truck, located between Java Moose and Harbor Inn, operates Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“Unless we sell out of fish early, then we close her down,” Brisson said.
In addition to supplying the food truck with fish for fish sandwiches, trout nuggets, fish cakes, and more, the commercial fisherman supplies numerous grocery stores and local restaurants in Grand Marais and along the North Shore.
Brisson said the public could find freshly caught fish at Johnson’s Foods, IGA, My Sister’s Place, Cook County Co-op, Poplar Haus, Fisherman’s Daughter, Angry Trout Cafe, and the Bluefin Grille in Tofte. More recently, depending on the capacity and quantities of fish, North Superior Fishery distributes fish to Super One Foods in Two Harbors, Zups in Silver Bay, and has started shipping fish to Minneapolis and the St. Paul area for a fish market business.
WTIP’s Kalli Hawkins sat down with North Superior Fishery owners Eric Brisson and Tyler Smith to talk about their business, the food truck, close calls on the boat, and more for the latest edition of the Local Business Spotlight. The audio from the interview is below.
