Metal art panels installed at Community Connector project, nears completion

Construction of the Community Connector project between the Grand Marais Recreation Park and the North House Folk School is still underway but is nearing completion.

Crews worked on March 23 and 24 to install the wooden arbor and metal art panels inspired by local artist George Morrison’s work. Only a few remaining tasks remain for the project.

The ‘Community Connector’ project was first introduced in 2011 at a Grand Marais Park Board meeting during the master planning process. The project raised the idea of an entryway of sorts to the campground, marina, and waterfront area in the unused space between the Recreation Park and the North House Folk School.

While the wooden arbor and metal art panels are now installed, Dave Tersteeg, the park’s manager, said a few more tasks remain.

Later this spring, once the project is officially completed, the recreation park will host an opening reception for the Community Connector project.

The recreation park is also creating an interpretive panel honoring the late George Morrison. The project has received support from George Morrison’s family – musician Briand Morrison and his mother, as well as artist Hazel Belvo. The panel is approximately 24 inches x 36 inches and is slated to include graphics and visual elements to accompany the words.
