Multiple fire departments respond to County Road 14 house fire

A house fire drew resources from multiple fire departments in Cook County Friday afternoon.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the structure fire at 3:48 p.m. at 25 Jeffery Lane, less than a mile north of Hungry Hippie Farm and Hostel.

Colvill Fire Department was first on the scene with an engine, and Hovland Fire Department arrived with an engine and a tender water supply. Grand Marais also arrived with their tender water supply.

According to emergency radio traffic, all occupants had evacuated the home before firefighters arrived. Crews were told the fire started in a downstairs bedroom.

At 4:39 p.m., Benny Silence, acting as Safety Officer, requested more manpower from the Lutsen and Maple Hill Fire Department.

By 5:20 p.m., firefighters on scene reported that the home’s roof had collapsed. About an hour later, crews said the fire was largely extinguished and they were searching for remaining hot spots.

Firefighters began clearing the scene and wrapping up operations by 7:45 p.m. Colvill Fire Department and four members of the Hovland Fire Department remained on scene until the State Fire Marshall could arrive to investigate.

“I want to thank everyone for coming out and appreciate their professionalism and dedication to service,” said Terry Spieker, Hovland Fire Chief.
