North Superior Fishery expands business and opens food truck

When Lake Superior herring numbers are abundant and an unexpected food truck becomes available, it makes perfect sense to combine the two.

And that is exactly what North Superior Fishery owners Eric Brisson and Tyler Smith did.

Tucked between Java Moose and Harbor Inn in Grand Marais, the new North Superior Fishery food truck serves fresh Lake Superior herring and fish sandwiches with homemade tarter sauce. The truck first made its debut on June 17 and has been a welcomed addition to the food scene in Grand Marais since opening.

“We’ve been talking about it for the past couple of years,” Brisson said. When a recent opportunity arose to purchase a small food truck, Brisson said, it was a no-brainer, and he bought it that day.

The timing also aligned with a bountiful start to the fishing season on Lake Superior.

“Herring numbers have been really good,” Brisson said. “They say they’re the best they’ve seen in 40+ years.”

The new two-fryer food truck is open six days a week from 11 a.m. to 5-6 p.m. It is currently closed on Sundays. The North Superior Fishery food truck will offer specials each week, such as trout nuggets with hand-cut fries. Brisson said to keep an eye on the North Superior Fishery Facebook page for special announcements or changes to hours of operation.

Brisson said they intend to keep the food truck operating until the beginning of October or until the fall run begins. “That’s where we start fishing really hard. So we won’t do the food truck then.”

As many in Grand Marais know, North Superior Fishery supplies the fish for the annual Lion’s Club fish burger stand during Fisherman’s Picnic. Brisson said they “won’t compete with the Lion’s Club” and plan to close the food truck during Fisherman’s Picnic. Brisson said he also recently joined the Lion’s Club and is looking forward to helping out during the annual event this summer.
