Public input wanted as DNR reviews walleye regulations for Saganaga, Seagull, and Gull Lakes

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking public input as it undergoes a review of expiring experimental walleye regulations on Saganaga, Gull, and Seagull Lake at the end of the Gunflint Trail.

The existing regulation includes a possession limit of three walleye, with a minimum length of 17 inches and one allowed over 20 inches. Experimental regulations have a set evaluation period of 10 years, after which the DNR must determine whether the change should become permanent, according to DNR officials.

The experimental walleye regulations set in 2015 aimed to protect smaller walleye and help increase the walleye populations in Sag and Seagull Lake.

On Friday, Sept. 20, the DNR will host an open house from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Seagull Lake Community Center to collect public input as part of the review process.  

“The purpose is to ask the public their thoughts on keeping the regulation, or possibly a component of the regulation,” said Edmund Isaac, Grand Marais area fisheries supervisor.

Isaac said the format will include a brief presentation explaining the existing experimental regulations and results from recent walleye surveys. Then there will be an opportunity for public comments.

The DNR decisions made regarding the special regulation will go into effect Mar. 1, 2025.
