Severe thunderstorms expected across North Shore, BWCAW Monday
Severe thunderstorms are expected across a large portion of northern Minnesota, including areas of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, on Monday.
The National Weather Service in Duluth issued a severe thunderstorm watch, in effect until 4 p.m. Monday, for much of the north-central and Arrowhead region.
“Stronger storms could produce hail up to golf ball sized and damaging winds up to 70 mph,” the National Weather Service said in a Facebook post.
Thunderstorms and precipitation began Monday morning near Duluth and are actively moving northeast along the North Shore and Lake Superior. Near Grand Marais, the first round of storms is expected to arrive early afternoon.
Later in the evening, a second storm is expected to arrive and impact areas from International Falls to Ely, as well as parts of the BWCAW.
“So any Boundary Waters people out there tonight could be impacted by that,” said Jonathan Wolfe, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service-Duluth.
Wolfe said the storm could bring large hail and damaging winds.
Severe heat and muggy conditions arrived across Minnesota and the northern regions on Monday. The National Weather Service said portions of the Northland are expected to see moderate to major risk of heat-related impacts.
“Because it’s so warm, that gives a lot of extra fuel to the storm,” Wolfe said. “So any storms that do form could be pretty strong.”
The National Weather Service in Duluth is requesting storm reports and damage photos, including the location, time, and details of what happened. Submit storm photos on the storm report thread on the Facebook page for the National Weather Service – Duluth.
