Summer road construction planned in the Superior National Forest
Cook County is in for another summer of road construction. The USDA and National Forest Service has released information on the road maintenance and construction projects they have planned for the coming months. The agencies will conduct several projects in the Tofte and Gunflint areas of the Superior National Forest.
Every one of the projects identified by the agencies includes culvert or ditch work, and several will include improving road surfaces.
In the press release issued by the USDA and National Forest Service, they stated that construction will begin this month. The projects are anticipated to continue through the summer and into the fall. Each of the improvement projects or repairs is expected to cause either delays or complete closures of the roads being worked on.
Projects are planned for the following roads:
- Forest Road (FR) 325-South Brule Road (work has already begun)
- FR 164-Honeymoon Trail (work has already begun)
- FR 326-Brule Lake Road
- FR 336-Onion River Road
- FR 309-Assinika Creek Culvert
- FR 170-Cascade River Culvert
In addition to the culvert, ditch, and gravel work, the project on Onion River Road will include improving parking for cyclist using the bike trails. The project on Cascade River Road will include replacing a culvert with a bridge. Further details on the traffic impacts of each project can be found here.
There will be an online public presentation on May 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., during which the agencies will review the assorted projects and answer questions from viewers. Those with concerns are encouraged to submit questions ahead of time by sending them to SM.FS.SNFNews@usda.gov. Details on how to access the meeting can be found here.
