Superior Cycling Association gearing up for summer
The Superior Cycling Association is asking riders to resist the urge to hit the local mountain biking trails until they are ready. Despite the sunshine and recent heat wave, the Pincushion and Britton Peak mountain biking trails may take a few more days to dry out.
Biking on the trails before they are fully dry can leave ruts that must be removed by volunteers doing trail maintenance. This can damage the trails for other bikers, and repairing the trails can be expensive.
Superior Cycling Association President Jay DeCoux is advising those eagerly awaiting the season to check the association’s website for updates.
“We have live-ish, as live as we can get, trail reports on there that say whether or not the trails are open and then what kind of conditions they’re in, so that’s the best place to look,” DeCoux told WTIP.
As the trails open over the next few days, it signals an exciting season for the volunteer organization. SCA is opening a skills park in Grand Marais for mountain biking beginners to practice their skills. The park will be installed by the end of June and will feature a pump track and bermed corners.
The association is also completing maintenance on the High Climber trail section that connects Onion River Road to Lutsen. The construction will increase the trail’s resiliency and add more features.
“We’re aiming to get it done around July 31, so we ask for your patience on that one. You can still ride from Britton Peak out to Onion River Road and back on the Jackpot Trail, but you just won’t be able to get all the way to Lutsen because that trail will be closed for construction,” DeCoux said.
The SCA is hosting events throughout the summer, starting with a fundraiser selling beer at the Lutsen 99er. The association will also host SheRides, a mountain biking clinic for women-identifying and non-binary riders.
The public has plenty of opportunities to get involved with the mountain biking organization. The SCA is seeking new board members and has a part-time position as a Strategic Growth Executive Director. There are also opportunities to help with regular trail maintenance throughout the year. More information on these roles can be found on the association’s website.
