Travel disruptions remain on The Grade until September 2025, Cascade Bridge replacement project delayed

A delayed bridge replacement on Forest Road 170, also known as “The Grade,” will continue to disrupt travel this fall as Cook County residents and visitors try to explore backroads, access BWCA entry points, and search for vibrant fall colors.

Construction of the Cascade River Bridge, located west of Eagle Mountain Trailhead and east of Caribou Trail, began during the summer of 2024. The Forest Service intends to replace an old culvert with a new bridge. The project was expected to be completed in Oct. 2024.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Cascade River Bridge installation has been delayed. Recreation sites affected are still accessible, and we are working with Cook County, Emergency Services, plus Visit Cook County to ensure visitors and residents are both aware of the alternative routes available,” said Kyle Stover, Gunflint District Ranger.

During the construction process, Forest Service officials said that additional design, resources, and time were needed to complete the project.

As a result, the road remains impassable, officials said, potentially until Sept. 2025.

In the meantime, travelers are asked to use alternative routes.
Alternative routes include:
• Alternate Route 1: Caribou trail to MN Highway 61, to the Gunflint trail to Cook County 8 “Devils Track Road” and Cook County 27 “Ball Club Road”.
• Alternate Route 2: FR158 “Bally Creek road”, this route is not plowed during winter.

The Eagle Mountain trailhead and foot access to the Cascade River will remain open.

Forest Service officials said the new bridge is needed to allow for appropriate water flow and to accommodate aquatic passage of the river system.
