Vikings Weekly: Volleyball team takes second in Early Bird tournament

The Cook County Vikings volleyball team opened its season with a second-place finish in the Silver Division of the Mora Early Bird Varsity Volleyball Tournament.

The Vikings went 2-2 in the round-robin tournament, defeating Northome/Kelliher and Floodwood in two sets while falling to Verndale and tournament host Mora in three sets.

The volleyball team has a busy week ahead with three matches, including back-to-back contests to start the week.

The Vikings will host Cherry on Monday, with the junior varsity and middle school teams playing at 5:15 p.m. and the varsity team at 6:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, the Vikings will travel to Barnum to face the Bombers. The junior varsity and middle school teams will play at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity at 7 p.m.

The Vikings will finish the week by hosting the South Ridge Panthers on Thursday. The junior varsity and middle school teams will play at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity at 7 p.m.

The middle school team will play its home matches in the YMCA gym Monday and Thursday, while the junior varsity and varsity matches will be held in the Pam Taylor Gymnasium.

Cross Country

The Cook County boys and girls cross-country teams will host the Pincushion Cross Country Meet at 1 p.m. Thursday.

The meet will feature teams from Stella Maris Academy and Carlton-Wrenshall.

Football

The Cook County Vikings football team will open its season Thursday on the road against the Carlton-Wrenshall Raptors at Jim Erickson Field in Carlton.

WTIP will broadcast the game beginning at 6 p.m.
