WTIP Visits Sawbill Trail for 2022 Beargrease

WTIP had the good fortune to visit the Sawbill checkpoint Monday during the 2022 John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon.

Among those WTIP spoke with are two members from a group of fat bikers who have organized the Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon to build community among the various trail user groups along the North Shore and to assist at checkpoints along the way, particularly at Sawbill.

This year the group of cyclists are dedicating their ride to the memory of Frank Moe, who initially helped musician and poet Ben Weaver plan the first sled dog and fat bike collaboration during the Beargrease.

Among those WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs spoke with during the Jan. 31 visit to the Sawbill Trail are Josh Capps is the coordinator of the Sawbill checkpoint, Josh’s mother Linda, the ‘camp cook and bacon lady’ at the checkpoint, musher Shawn McCarty and cyclists Ben Weaver and Alexandera Houchin.
