Trees topple in Grand Marais as wind gusts top 50 mph near Lake Superior

Wind gusts at more than 50 mph are being reported near Grand Marais today. Strong winds blew down a large spruce tree near the Grand Marais Public Library as winds rolled in from the north. The top of the tree was close to Highway 61 after it fell.

A wind advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. today, as advised by the National Weather Service in Duluth. Waves topping 20 ft. were likely on Lake Superior Tuesday, according to the Weather Service. 

Tuesday’s gusty start follows a cold and windy Monday, where power was knocked out for most of Cook County around 11:30 a.m. to start the work week. After a brief outage, power was restored, though the cause of the temporary situation remains unknown, according to Arrowhead Electric Cooperative officials who spoke with WTIP Oct. 17.

Additional power outages were reported Tuesday morning and early afternoon on the east end of Cook County, including parts of Hovland and Grand Portage. Arrowhead line crews were responding to the situation.
