Clipper arrives late but delivers heavy snow and high winds across the North Shore, more winter weather expected this weekend
It may have arrived several hours later than predicted, but the Arrowhead got a fresh layer of snow between Thursday night and Friday. The region experienced strong winds along with precipitation, though snowfall totals varied widely.
Snowfall totals collected at 7 a.m. on Friday through the citizen science Community Collaborative Rain Hail and Snow (CoCoRaHS) Network ranged over the past 24 hours, though some contributors noted that the strong winds made accurate measuring hard. Below are snow totals reported through CoCoRaHS
- Tofte: 8.7 inches
- Lutsen: 8.5 inches
- Birch Drive/Grand Marais: 9 inches, 12.6 inches
- Maple Hill/Grand Marais: 10 inches
- Hovland: 13.5 inches
This particular clipper system has wrapped up, but this weekend could hold more show for shoreline communities. National Weather Service Meteorologist Bryan Howell told WTIP that while the storm system moving through the region this weekend will hit the South Shore hardest, North Shore residents will still feel some impacts.
Saturday has sun in the forecast, but Sunday could bring up to five inches of snow in Duluth, and up to 15 inches to some communities in Wisconsin. Howell said that while only a few inches are predicted for Cook County, residents can expect a return of strong winds. He warned that as the storm moves through the area, it could leave 50 mph gusts in its wake. He said that is most likely to happen on Sunday night, with a potential that it could continue into Monday.
Along with the strong winds, Howell added that the area will likely see a blast of cold air following the weather system, with temperatures falling close to zero on Sunday night before a slow warmup over the week.
