Authorities searching for missing 70-year old hiker on Isle Royale National Park

Authorities are searching for a missing Michigan man on the remote island of Isle Royale after his family reported he did not return home from his multi-day hiking trip.

Craig Berg, 70, from Royal Oak, Mich., was scheduled to depart Isle Royale National Park on the Ranger III on Sept. 5.

When he did not return home, his family contacted law enforcement and reported him missing on Sunday, Sept. 6, according to Isle Royale National Park officials.

“Search operations have been ongoing since that report,” said Liz Valencia, the acting administrative officer with Isle Royale National Park.

According to Berg’s family, he was backpacking the Greenstone Trail, which is a 40-mile path that runs the length of the 206-square-mile island on Lake Superior.

Once arriving on the island for his multi-day hiking trip, he shared his itinerary with Isle Royale National Park wilderness rangers, according to a Facebook post from a family member. Because campsites were recently closed after wolves raided campsites and tents for food, Berg had to modify his hiking plan, according to his family. In the Facebook post, a family member said they have the original route, but did not receive a copy of the modified route to account for the campsite closures.

Berg’s family describes him as an adventurous, experienced, and strong hiker.
