Bird Banding Demonstrations

Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center hosts bird banding demonstrations on Thursday mornings between 7 am and 11 am. Demonstrations are weather-dependent. Call the Cove to check at 218-663-7679. More information at sugarloafnorthshore.org.

Sawmill Tours

Sawmill Tours at Hedstrom Lumber are held during the summer on Thursdays at 10 am and 1 pm. Tours are led by Steve Robertson, a recently retired interpreter for the US Forest Service. Tours require a reservation. Reservations can be made at hedstromlumber.com.

Grand Marais Farmers Market

The Grand Marais Farmers Market is held on Thursdays from 4:30 to 6 pm at the Cook County Community Center Parking Lot. The market is operated as a partnership between the Northwoods Food Project, the Cook County Community Center, and Cook County U of MN Extension.

Finland Farmers Market

The Finland Farmers Market is held on Thursdays from 5 to 6:30 pm at the Clair Nelson Center pavilions.

Tofte Township meeting

The Tofte Township Board of Supervisors meets on the second Thursday of each month at the Tofte Town Hall at 7 pm. More information at toftemn.com.

Assistance Requested for Historical and Archeological Survey of Grand Marais

The State of Minnesota, through the advisory board of the Statewide Survey of Cultural and Historical Sites, has commissioned an archaeological survey of the City of Grand Marais. The EARTH Systems Research Laboratory at Minnesota State University, Mankato, is conducting the survey to gather and report information about locations where archaeological sites exist within the city limits.

To conduct a thorough survey, the Grand Marais community is invited to share their knowledge of specific locations where artifacts from ancient and historical Native American occupations have been found, as well as where early historical European American artifacts have been found.

Community Picnic and Parade with Makwa the Black Bear

The Grand Marais Public Library invites residents and visitors of all ages to a community picnic and parade on Friday, August 14. The event marks the grand finale of the library’s Summer Reading Program.

The celebration begins at 10:30 am with a hands-on art activity led by puppet artist Christopher Lutter-Gardella of Big Animal Productions.  At noon, everyone is invited to enjoy a free community picnic lunch and lawn games on the library grounds.

At 12:45 p.m., gather in front of the library for a festive parade to Harbor Park led by Makwa, a giant wooden black bear puppet handcrafted by Big Animal Productions.

Opening Reception: "Painting Pictures with Words, Telling Stories with Paint"

Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery hosts the opening reception for “Painting Pictures with Words, Telling Stories with Paint,” featuring work from local artist Marcia Roepke on Friday, August 14, from 5 to 7 pm.  An artist talk with Marcia will start at 6 pm. The show combines her oil paintings from the last year with stories from “Trail Time” (her radio segment heard on WTIP).

Harbor History Walking Tours with the Cook County Historical Society

The Cook County Historical Society leads Harbor History Walking Tours on Fridays from 7 to 8:30 pm (weather permitting). Interested participants can meet outside the History Museum and should be able to walk approximately a mile on uneven surfaces. More information at cookcountyhistory.org.
