Lunch & Learn: Understanding Alzheimer's & Dementia

Care Partners of Cook County hosts a Lunch & Learn: Understanding Alzheimer’s & Dementia on Wednesday, August 27, from noon to 1 pm, at Cook County Higher Education or via Zoom. Jenna Pogorels from the Minnesota-North Dakota chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association will share current research and treatments available, and Alzheimer’s Association resources.

Cook County West End Alanon

The West End Alanon family Group meets each Wednesday at 7 pm at the Lutsen Town Hall.  Alanon is a group that supports friends and family members of alcoholics.  The group welcomes anyone who has been affected by a friend or family member who has a problem with alcohol.

Northern Lotus Meditation

Northern Lotus Meditation takes place on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 pm, with instruction in meditation and room manners at 6:45 pm, at Two Birds Healing Arts Center in Grand Marais.

Beach Knitting

Beach Knitting with Dappled Fern Fibers is held on the Grand Marais Harbor Beach on Tuesday evening from 5:30 to 7 pm and Thursday mornings from 10 to 11:30 am through August. This social knitting group is gently facilitated with thoughtful questions. Bring a simple project, all fiber arts welcome.

Sawmill Tours

Hedstrom Lumber Company hosts Sawmill Tours on Thursdays from 10 to 11:30 am and 1 to 2:30 pm. These tours are led by Steve Robertson, retired interpreter for the US Forest Service. Hedstrom provides safety equipment, and tours involve indoor and outdoor walking over uneven surfaces and climbing stairs. Tours require an online reservation. Thursday Art Night

Joy and Company hosts Thursday Art Night every Thursday from 3:30 – 5 pm.  New events are planned each week.  More information is available on the Joy and Company Facebook page.

Grand Marais Farmers Market

The Grand Marais Farmers Market is held on Thursdays from 4:30 to 6 pm through mid-October at the Cook County Community Center parking lot. The market is a partnership between the Northwoods Food Project (a 501c3 non-profit organization), the Cook County Community Center, and the Cook County U of MN Extension.

The Muffin Man Children’s Story Hour

The Muffin Man, Kevin Kager, reads his favorite picture books on the beachside at Drury Lane Books each Saturday at 11 am (weather permitting) from Memorial Day to Labor Day.  More information is available at drurylanebooks.com.

Author Talk with T. Williams and David Lawrence Grant, "Rewind: Lessons from Fifty Years of Activism"

Drury Lane Books hosts an author talk with Minneapolis activist T Williams and editor David Lawrence Grant on Saturday, August 30 from 6 to 7:30 pm. The Old-Fashioned Pie and Ice Cream Social

The annual Old-Fashioned Pie and Ice Cream Social at Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center will be held on Sunday, August 31, from noon to 4 pm. The day will feature music by Bump Blomberg, a pie competition, games, and more. More information is available at gunflinthistory.org.

Bone Builders is a group exercise weight training program that was created for adults who are interested in preventing and reducing osteoporosis. Bone Builders meets at the Lutsen Town Hall on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 to 11 am.

Grand Marais Al-Anon Meetings

Monday Night Al-Anon will meet Mondays, at 7 pm at the First Congregational Church in Grand Marais.

Happy Hikers

Connecting Caregivers

Care Partners is offering a new opportunity for caregivers to gather for casual conversation and mutual encouragement. This monthly meeting is open to anyone who is caring for an older friend or family member, and offers a chance to visit with others who share the caregiving journey. Led by Care Partners volunteers Kathy Reeves and Kay Costello, the group will meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 1 pm at The Hub.
