Lake County Sheriff announces retirement, will not seek reelection

On Tuesday, Lake County Sheriff Nathan Stadler announced he is planning to retire at the end of 2026 and will not seek reelection this year.

Stadler was elected as Lake County Sheriff in November 2022 and sworn into office on Jan. 3, 2023.

A 1990 graduate of William Kelley High School in Silver Bay, Stadler has spent most of his life in Lake County. After high school, he pursued a career in law enforcement and was hired as a Lake County Deputy Sheriff. He has served in Lake County law enforcement for more than 30 years.

“The past 32 years serving the residents of Lake County has truly been an honor,” Stadler said in a Facebook post announcement.

“From my first day in a Silver Bay Police uniform to my final days as Sheriff, I have had the privilege of working alongside some of the finest men and women in law enforcement and emergency services,” Stadler said. “Together, we have faced challenges, built strong partnerships, and remained committed to protecting and serving with integrity and respect.”

Stadler said he is “grateful to the Sheriff’s Office staff, county leaders, and citizens who have placed their trust in me. Your support has meant a lot.”

The sheriff’s seat will appear on the ballot in November.

The announcement follows another North Shore sheriff who has announced retirement and who will also not be seeking reelection. On Jan. 13, Cook County Sheriff Pat Eliasen announced that after 31 years in law enforcement, he will finish his term at the end of 2026 and retire.
