Small wildfire burning 15 miles SE of Ely in Superior National Forest

A small three-acre wildfire suspected to have been started by lightening is 100% contained according to the U.S. Forest Service. The Forest Service said in a statement on Aug. 11 ground resources continue to work the fire by mopping up and monitoring precipitation.

There is a small three acre wildfire burning approximately 15 miles southeast of Ely.

The fire, known as the August Lake Fire, was detected on Aug. 7 with aerial observation. It is located near Heart Lake and August Lake and is approximately 5 miles east of Hwy 1 and north of FS Road 1461.

The initial suspected cause of the fire is lightening. The Forest Service said in a statement at 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 8, the fire is burning in heavy vegetation with difficult access.

The Forest Service is using both aerial and ground suppression tactics at this time. The fire is currently creeping on the ground with 1-2 foot flame lengths.

There are no closures or campfire bans at this time.
