Friends of the Superior National Forest is seeking volunteers to help with trail clearing and fixing eroded areas on the Moss Lake Trail and South Lake Trail on July 19-21. This project requires volunteers to be able to hike about 4 miles over rough terrain over the course of the day. Work will go from 8:30 am to no later than 4 pm each day. Cook County SWCD is sponsoring Take a Kid Fishing Day on Saturday, July 19, from 9 am to noon at Elbow Lake (9.5 miles north on the Gunflint Trail, turn left on Elbow Lake Landing Road). Lunch and bait will be provided, and DNR fisheries staff will provide boat rides, shore and dock fishing, minnow traps, and more. A limited amount of fishing poles and lifejackets will be available.

Care Partners of Cook County presents their first-ever Brain Health Fair on Saturday, July 19, from 10 am to noon at the end of Wisconsin Street (between Drury Lane Books and East Bay Suites). There will be booths from community businesses and organizations featuring tips and tricks for loving your brain. The Grand Marais Public Library hosts Sandra Hisakuni to teach a haiku workshop on Saturday, July 19, from 10:30 am to noon. Hisakuni will read from her award-winning book of haikus, The Northland Beckons, revealing her inspiration from both Japan and the Boundary Waters.
All supplies will be provided to participants. This workshop is open to ages eight and up.
The Muffin Man, Kevin Kager, reads his favorite picture books on the beachside at Drury Lane Books each Saturday at 11 am (weather permitting) from Memorial Day to Labor Day. More information is available at drurylanebooks.com.
The West End Garden Club’s Annual Flower Show will be held on Saturday, July 19, from 1 to 5 pm at Surfside Ballroom in Tofte. The Annual Flower Show will feature flower arrangements creatively designed and put together by club members. The West End includes Lutsen, Tofte, and Schroeder. The event is open to the public. The theme of the show this year is “Aurora Florealis.”
