First winter storm arrives in Cook County and along North Shore
It took a few months, but the first winter snowstorm has officially greeted Cook County and the North Shore.
Overnight, the formerly brown front lawns, empty city streets, and inland lakes were blanketed with a thick coating of fluffy white snow. And with that, it’s officially starting to look like winter in northeastern Minnesota.
The southern regions of Lake and Cook County, including the cities of Two Harbors, Silver Bay, and Grand Marais, will remain under winter weather advisory until 6 a.m. Sunday morning, Jan 7. According to the National Weather Service, snow accumulations of 2-4 inches are expected.
As of 7:30 a.m. this morning, residents in Grand Marais received 3 inches of snow.
The National Weather Service advises drivers to slow down and use caution while traveling as there may be slippery road conditions. Reports of vehicle accidents due to icy conditions have been reported surrounding Duluth.
According to Minnesota 511, between the WTIP Community Radio station and the Pigeon River Bridge at the Canadian Border, there is light snow on Highway 61. Reports of slush on Highway 61 between Silver Bay and Grand Marais are reported.
