Writer in Residence: Brian Malloy @ the Library

The Grand Marais Public Library hosts a writing workshop on Funny Stuff with award-winning novelist Brian Malloy on Wednesday, July 9 from 6 to 8 pm. The workshop will be geared toward adults and youth, ages fourteen and above. Attendees should bring paper and a pen or pencil. The workshop is part of a series of workshops led by Malloy at the Library.

Cook County West End Alanon

The West End Alanon family Group meets each Wednesday at 7 pm at the Lutsen Town Hall.  Alanon is a group that supports friends and family members of alcoholics.  The group welcomes anyone who has been affected by a friend or family member who has a problem with alcohol.

Northern Lotus Meditation

Northern Lotus Meditation takes place on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 pm, with instruction in meditation and room manners at 6:45 pm, at Two Birds Healing Arts Center in Grand Marais.

Beach Knitting

Beach Knitting with Dappled Fern Fibers is held on the Grand Marais Harbor Beach on Tuesday evening from 5:30 to 7 pm and Thursday mornings from 10 to 11:30 am through August. This social knitting group is gently facilitated with thoughtful questions. Bring a simple project, all fiber arts welcome.

Bird Banding

Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center hosts bird banding on Thursdays from 7 to 11 am.  Special programs about bird banding will be held at 10 am. More information at sugarloafnorthshore.org.

Bird banding is weather dependent; rain or excessive wind may cause the banding session to be cancelled. Sugarloaf Cove can be reached at 218-663-7679 to check.

Coffee & Donuts at WTIP

Join us at the station for a morning of Fika coffee and donuts from World’s Best Donuts. July 10 from 8 – 10 AM at WTIP on Highway 61.

Summer food program

Cook County Schools hosts a summer food program from June 9 to August 15. The program provides meals for all children 18 and younger. No registration or income requirements necessary.

Meals are Monday to Friday, breakfast from 8:30 to 9:15 am, and lunch from 11:15 am to noon. Meals must be eaten in the cafeteria.

Sawmill Tours

Hedstrom Lumber Company hosts Sawmill Tours on Thursdays from 10 to 11:30 am and 1 to 2:30 pm. These tours are led by Steve Robertson, retired interpreter for the US Forest Service. Hedstrom provides safety equipment, and tours involve indoor and outdoor walking over uneven surfaces and climbing stairs. Tours require an online reservation.
